Hey, remember that time when Serena Williams‘ pregnancy announcement shocked us all? The reigning queen of tennis announced that she was 20 weeks pregnant with a very casual swimsuit selfie on Snapchat. Well, as it turns out, that Snap heard ’round the world was actually sent out to the masses completely by accident. Whoops.
Anyone who’s ever operated Snapchat knows that one wrong tap, and the photo you meant to go out to a few select friends can be inadvertently posted to your Story, becoming visible to all your followers. Williams, it seems, was a victim of this very situation, and what was meant to be a private pic of her growing belly ended up being her notice to the world that she and fiancé Alexis Ohanian, cofounder of Reddit, were expecting a new addition.
The tennis champ talked to Gayle King about the announcement at the 2017 Ted Talks conference in Vancouver on Tuesday, “Well, actually it was an accident. I was on vacation just taking some time for myself and I have this thing where I’ve been checking my status and taking pictures every week to see how far along I’m going. I didn’t tell a lot of people to be quite honest and I’d been saving it. On social media, you press the wrong button and… 30 minutes later I missed four calls and I’m like, ‘That’s weird.'”
Weird, indeed. But luckily, Williams wasn’t planning on waiting much longer to reveal that she’s expecting, anyway, so she has no hard feelings about the slip up.
“But it was a good moment. I was only going to wait five or six more days [to share the news],” she said. “Every week I just take a picture and save it and I’ve been so good about it and this was the one time I slipped, but it’s OK.”
And luckily for us, the incident hasn’t put the athlete off from posting even more pregnancy updates to social media. A few days after that unintentional announcement, Williams took to Instagram to share a beach selfie and sweet note to her unborn child. “My Dearest Baby, You gave me the strength I didn’t know I had,” she wrote. “You taught me the true meaning of serenity and peace. I can’t wait to meet you. I can’t wait for you to join the players box next year.”
