Apple announced a red hot addition to its iPhone family today: A special edition (PRODUCT)RED iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. With each limited edition phone purchased, a portion of the proceeds will go to the Global Fund in support of HIV/AIDS programs and research.
While the functionality of this phone is no different than the existing iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, the color is a symbol of an important fight. More than 36 million people worldwide are living with HIV/AIDS. More than two thirds of those affected live in sub-Saharan Africa, where (RED) and the Global Fund are working to eradicate the disease. (RED) was founded in 2006, and has generated more than $465 million for the Global Fund since then.
Apple has been working with (RED) for 10 years, and has released special editions of other devices—like the iPod nano and the current Beats headphones. “Apple is the world’s largest corporate donor to the Global Fund, contributing to more than $130 million as part of its partnership with (RED),” Deborah Dugan, (RED)’s CEO, said in a statement. “Combining the global reach of the world’s most loved smartphone with our efforts to provide access to life-saving ARV medication in sub-Saharan Africa, customers now have a remarkable opportunity to make a difference and contribute to the Global Fund through the purchase of this new beautiful (PRODUCT)RED iPhone.”
The (PRODUCT)Red Special Edition iPhone will be available in 128GB and 256GB models starting at $749, and you can buy it in stores or online starting on Friday, March 24.
